About Us

Who We Are
We are an undenominational organisation, set up by evangelical Christians as ‘The Aged Pilgrims’ Friend Society’ in 1807. In 2007 we celebrated 200 years of God’s goodness to His older saints through our Society. We are a registered charity (No. 242266) and registered social landlord (RSL No. A0822).

What We Do
We exist for exactly the same reason we were founded over 200 years’ ago - to meet the needs of our older brothers and sisters in Christ; Protestant Christians over the age of 60 who subscribe to our Doctrinal Basis.

A pension for an elderly hungry, cold Christian in London during the Napoleonic wars met an immediate need. A well-built almshouse provided better shelter and protection in Victorian England. Before and after the Great War, nursing wings and residential care homes were the best settings to care for frail Christians. Then, sheltered housing with wardens and very sheltered housing with meals and domestic services helped them remain independent. Times are constantly changing, and today the call is for extra care housing, where people can receive the support and care they need in their own homes in a purpose-designed environment.

The spiritual welfare of elderly Christians is as much our concern as their physical and mental well-being. The government recognises the importance of faith for older people. In an advisory booklet to local councils the Department of Health says they should bear in mind ‘older people from all groups, both majority and minority, whose religious observance is often central to their lives’. People will often leave home towns and travel hundreds of miles to live in one of our schemes. Every Pilgrim Home is a family of brothers and sisters in the Lord. Our senior staff are all committed Christians.

We would not be able to do what we do without our friends and supporters. Home Support Groups and Home Visitors provide pastoral care and practical help. Regional Auxiliaries raise funds and make our work widely known. Members and donors give regularly. All these friends remember us in prayer.

Are you a pilgrim? Are 'the Lord’s statutes your songs, in the house of your pilgrimage'? Psalm 119:54. God willing, one day you too will be nearing the end of your pilgrimage, and might be glad of encouragement, care and support. Why not join us now in helping those who are further along the road?
