Visiting guidance – update

Contact visits for one visitor to be allowed from 8th March

Under the new guidance from Government, care home residents in England will be allowed one regular visitor from 8th March. This visitor will be able to come indoors and hold hands with the resident, but must be tested for coronavirus beforehand and wear PPE.

At Pilgrims’ Friend Society, we are delighted that visits in care homes with more personal contact can begin to resume in a limited way. The safety and wellbeing of those who live and work with us is our priority, so we welcome the Government’s guidelines on testing and PPE for visitors, and the recognition that our residents and staff are still awaiting their second vaccinations.

We are pleased that residents and a loved one will be able to have these visits as we have seen first-hand how difficult it has been for them to have such limited contact over the last year.

In recent months, our homes have been permitted non-contact visits only, with visitors and residents separated by see-through partitions. For example, Framland, our home in Wantage, have turned their hairdressing room into a visiting room. At Evington Home, Leicester, a separate visiting room has been set up, which visitors can enter directly from the car park without passing through the home.

These visits have been a real boost for both residents and loved ones. We are now looking forward to extending the visits we can offer to include contact visits for one named visitor, and our homes will be working hard to ensure these visits can take place safely.

We would also welcome further guidance on when we can welcome back hairdressers and our less regular volunteers, who provide much-valued support with our activities and the spiritual life of our homes.

Victoria Stone, our Coronavirus Lead, has been speaking to members of the press about the updated visiting guidance for care homes.
