War memories for VE Day
To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May, people living across our homes and schemes shared their stories with the press
The Church Times interviewed three ladies about their war time memories and how they had shaped their lives and faith. Eunice, who lives at Finborough Court Housing in Great Finborough, shared how the bombing of her friends' home prompted her to pray and also spoke of how she went on to become a surgeon. Esther, who lives at Milward House in Tunbridge Wells, shared how a bomb came through her bedroom window while she was sleeping. Mary at Middlefields House in Chippenham recalled how a bombing raid on her local park led a kangaroo to be freed from its cage and go hopping down the road. You can read the piece in the Church Times here.
An interview with Esther was also broadcast on BBC South East while Mary was interviewed for the BBC Wiltshire website. You can read Mary's BBC interview here. Gordon, also living at Middlefields House, was also interviewed by BBC Wiltshire. You can read his interview here.
Meanwhile, Bethany House in Preston had a visit from BBC Radio Lancashire. Alan spoke of his time in the Royal Navy as a member of the crew on HMS Charybdis. When Alan was home for a week's leave, the ship was sunk with the tragic loss of over 400 lives. Cyril spoke of how he volunteered for the RAF and was sent to India and spent his time mending aircraft. You can find their interviews with Nishma Hindocha from 8th May on BBC Sounds, under BBC Lancashire, Allan beginning at around 2h7m and Cyril at around 2h13m25s into the programme (available for 30 days after broadcast).

Stan is a Second World War veteran living at Bridgemead in Bath who was aboard HMS Fratton when it was torpedoed off the coast of Normandy. Stan sustained injuries to his legs and spine and was rescued from He was interviewed as part of the BBC's VE Day 80: We Were There (you'll need a BBC iPlayer account to view). Stan celebrated his 100th birthday on 7th May (the day before VE Day) and was treated to a special birthday party and a visit by the local mayor - also covered by the local BBC here.
