Flippin' fun
Tyler Sewell-Nicholas
Pancake Day at Evington Home, Leicester, was celebrated in the lounge this year, and it quickly turned into an afternoon full of laughter, surprises and a few very questionable pancake flips
The event was organised by Barbara, Activities and Community Engagement (ACE) Facilitator of the home, along with Lisa, the home’s chef, expertly preparing the pancake and making sure it was flip-ready. 'Family members' (those who live with us) and staff gathered round, eager to take part and see how their flipping skills would measure up.
The fun really began when Barbara stepped up for her turn. As she flipped the pancake, she started making some very unusual noises - apparently a key part of her pancake-flipping technique. I had always assumed pancakes flipped silently, but Barbara clearly knew something the rest of us didn’t. The lounge erupted with laughter, and from that moment on, everyone watched closely to see what might happen next.
The business manager, Indy, along with a few other staff members, showed some serious flipping talent. Their pancakes soared gracefully and landed perfectly back in the pan. Lisa, observing these impressive attempts, jokingly labelled them 'show-offs,' making it clear that not everyone was expected to be quite that skilled.
Not wanting anyone to miss out, we then took the pancake on tour, visiting family members in their rooms to see if they would like to have a go. Margaret was especially keen and gave it her best shot. The pancake, however, had other ideas and refused to flip properly. Without missing a beat, Lisa calmly flipped it for her - with her bare hands. Margaret chuckled so much at this unexpected display that her laughter filled the room.
Once we had made our way around all the family members, the pancake had been flipped, dropped, rescued and applauded more times than anyone could count. Finally, Lisa turned to me and said, "Now who wants to eat it?” That was the final straw - we all laughed our socks off.
And with that, the pancake flipping activity came to an end.
