Meet a carer...Nadia

Tyler Sewell-Nicholas

Nadia, 22, joined the team at Emmaus House, Harrogate in September 2021 and has recently been named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ by her college, Harrogate College. We chatted to Nadia about her passion for care

I moved to the UK with my family five and a half years ago, just before lockdown. It was a strange time to start a new life – new language, new people. Everything seemed unfamiliar. I was born in Italy, but my family is Romanian, so I speak both of those languages. English is actually my third language. And it hasn’t always been easy!

A friendly face makes all the difference when you’re learning something new. When we arrived, none of us spoke much English, and with lockdown, we stayed inside a lot. But a neighbour across the street would often chat to me from her door, giving me chances to learn. Those small talks helped a lot.

It was my twin sister Alessandra who first found Emmaus House. She started working here and said to me, “You should try it. Staff really care about the home and the people in it.” So, I gave it a go. She decided to pursue other career prospects, but I stayed. That was almost four years ago, and I haven’t looked back since.

Since then, I’ve taken every opportunity to grow. I completed a year-long apprenticeship, earning my Level 2 NVQ in Health and Social Care, which combined practical work with study. I began my Level 3 last December and, once I finish, I’ll be able to apply for a senior carer role within the home. Alongside this, I’ve completed functional skills in maths and English, and this year I took my GCSEs, with results due in August. It’s been a lot to balance, but I’ve really enjoyed the journey so far.

I also trained to be Emmaus House’s moving and handling trainer. When the previous trainer went on maternity leave, I stepped in. After completing the course, I now train everyone at the home, from carers to kitchen staff. It’s been such a rewarding challenge.

Rebecca, our care team leader, has been a big part of my journey. We used to work night shifts together when I first started. She’s always been patient, ready to answer my questions, and willing to support me through every step. Watching her progress in her career gives me motivation that I could do the same.

Emmaus House is a place where faith is welcomed, and that means a lot to me. I was baptised Orthodox, but I simply think of myself as Christian. We have devotions each week, a Sunday service, and we always say a prayer before meals. On difficult days, I know there’s always someone to talk to, or a quiet place where I can reflect.

There have been so many little moments that meant something. One that always sticks with me was a night shift with Rita, a previous ‘family member’ [as we call those who live with us]. She couldn’t sleep and came to the lounge. We watched something silly on TV, laughed, and relaxed. That small moment meant everything.

It’s not just a job, it’s personal. That’s how I see care. I’ve always had this instinct to nurture. In Romania, I helped look after my grandmother, and I think that planted something in me.

People here say I treat our family members like they’re my relatives. Tomorrow we’re going to Valley Gardens for a picnic. Days like these are my favourite, seeing everyone out together, talking, laughing. That’s what good care looks like to me. It’s not just about meeting needs; it’s about creating joy.

People always say I’m outgoing, and it’s true. But I’m also more serious than people might expect. I take my work seriously. I want to do things properly, to keep learning and progressing.

When I’m not at work, I love to read. I guess I’m a bit of an old soul. Give me a good book and a cup of tea and I’m happy. Dan Brown is one of my favourite authors of all time.

Learning to drive is my next goal. I’ve paused it for now but will resume after my exams.

Emmaus House has shaped me in so many ways. I started here unsure, a little nervous. Now I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and excited for what’s next.

In her spare time, Nadia likes:

• reading Dan Brown books

• watching a variety of films

Fun fact:

• She has a Vitruvian Man tattoo inspired by The Da Vinci Code
