Life at Emmaus House

Rooted in the Christian faith, life at Emmaus House supports our residents to live fulfilled lives in their later years. We provide excellent, personalised care which supports our residents to flourish in older age.

Emmaus House has an active social life in which residents can take part, or follow their own pursuits. We appreciate that each resident has their own individual interests, hobbies and pastimes, and we endeavour to support our residents to maintain this important part of their lives. Our residents are encouraged to lead the lifestyle that they choose, doing as much or as little as they want residents can simply choose to put their feet up with a daily paper or a good book from the homes’ own collection.

The home employs an Activities Coordinator who is supported by a team of volunteers, providing a range of planned activities or spending time one on one with our residents. Our weekly programme includes activities such as arm chair exercises, quizzes, crafts, walks in the Valley Gardens, pet therapy, board games, talks and much more. Those who are unable to join with the activities are visited in their rooms by volunteers. A hairdresser visits once a week.

As a Christian community, both residents and staff of Emmaus House meet daily for devotional times. There is a Sunday service, monthly communion service and regular hymn singing. Emmaus House also benefits from the active involvement of supporters from local churches, who not only visit regularly to take devotions, services, prayer meetings, Bible studies and communion services, but also provide pastoral support to the residents and staff. There are a number of churches of various denominations within easy reach of the home.

Registered Care Manager  -  Lesley Strafford

Lesley joined Emmaus House from an altogether different Emmaus - in Bedfordshire - a charity and social enterprise for formerly homeless people, where she worked as support manager. Prior to that, Lesley worked for Age UK in London as manager of a day centre but spent most of her working life as a Salvation Army minister of religion in the UK and in Italy.

Lesley has two grown up children: one at university and the other working in Hong Kong. She is an avid Francophile visiting France in her free time whenever she can and enjoys swimming and reading crime fiction. Lesley attends The Salvation Army in Shipley which is a small church with plenty of scope to get involved!

Administrator - Sharon Smith

Sharon joined Emmaus House in 2017 after many years in the chemical industry and a decade of teaching science. This is a welcomed career change with no late night marking to do! She lives with her farmer husband, sons and various livestock on a working farm in Nidderdale.

Sharon became a Christian in her 30s and is active in her local church where she helps with young children’s sessions and a bit of admin. She loves working at Emmaus House which has a really special, homely environment and a supportive team.
